I lost Gracie, the model for Goldeneyes, in October. A few days after she died, I found a tiny, half-Siamese, half-tabby female kitten at a local agency. I named her Meimei, the Mandarin word for “little sister” I learned from watching Firefly. And I completely forgot to post about her here. I’ve been writing about her on my political blog, but I’m winding that one down and concentrating on this one now. (Note to self: Copy over Meimei and Tigger posts.)
Meimei is a stunning, active, tiny “Tabinese” (half-Siamese, half tabby cat). She doesn’t quite reach six pounds on the scale at the vet’s, and she’s about ten months old. Her favorite game is fetching a blue striped ball which I am calling–wait for it–“Blue Stripey.” (Sometimes I call it “Mr. Stripey” or just plain “Stripey.”) Meimei has a habit of losing it for days at a time because she puts it somewhere out of sight or knocks it under things. Just the other day she managed to put Mr. Stripey in my file cabinet drawer while I wasn’t looking. It reappeared when I decided to clean out the drawer, after failing to find it for two days.
I bought her a dozen more foam balls because I figured the blue striped one would get lost for good someday. She’ll chase them down the stairs. And then she will ignore them, because they are not Blue Stripey. Although she will put them in my bed. I rolled over on one this morning (so much fun!) and found another at the foot of my bed. I think she brings them partly to play, and partly in the hope that I will wake up and throw them. I find a variety of cat toys in the bed when I wake up, including the long wands with fur ribbons on the end that she drags up from downstairs. She’s been doing that since I got her. And yes, it is utterly hilarious to see such a tiny cat drag a three-foot cat toy up the stairs.
Here’s a picture of Meimei with Stripey. She is a happy, happy girl, and while I still miss Gracie, Meimei is a worthy successor. Tig thinks so, too.
